Greenhouse Gases

A condominium at 4700 Bathurst St. will contribute unacceptable and dangerous amounts of greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gases trap heat energy emitted from the Earth, thus contributing to the greenhouse effect

Greenhouse gases have far-ranging detrimental environmental and health effects. They cause climate change by trapping heat, and they also contribute to respiratory disease from smog and air pollution. Extreme weather, food supply disruptions, and increased wildfires are other effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gases.

“Toronto’s 2018 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory”
Greenhouse Gases
  • Buildings – residential, commercial and industrial – were the largest source of emissions in Toronto, accounting for about 55 per cent of total community-wide emissions. Natural gas, the fossil fuel used to heat buildings, continues to be the largest source of emissions community-wide, accounting for approximately 50 per cent of Toronto’s total GHG emissions.
  • Transportation was the second largest source, accounting for 36 per cent of total emissions.  Gasoline, the fuel used to power vehicles, accounts for about 30 per cent of Toronto’s total GHG emissions.

“The proposal does not address the adverse effects on the health of the community from increased concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere from density intensification. The potential increase in harmful GHG’s is in direct contravention of the federal government’s well-publicized agenda. I will happily provide supporting documentation if you require it, including direct quotes from the Prime Minister.

Bathurst Street traffic grinds to a halt from Sheppard northbound during the rush hour. Increased vehicle delay and slow access to an already overburdened Bathurst Street, translates to a further increase of Co2 greenhouse gases. The average passenger vehicle emits about 404 grams of Co2 per 1.60 kilometre (1 mile). A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. Adding an additional 157 parking spaces x 4.6 = 722.2 metric tons of Co2 per year coming from the 9 story 4700 Bathurst St. location, the increase of Co2 is alarming. Furthermore, automobiles produce methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the tail pipes and hydrofluorocarbon emissions from leaking air conditioners. The emissions of these gases may be small in comparison to Co2, but must be considered for they have greater global warming potential (GWP) than Co2. We are favourably disposed to Canada’s initiative to reduce Co2 emissions associated with the internal combustion engines that run on gasoline, diesel and supporting the Paris Climate Agreement along with (IPCC) climate change policies https://www.ipcc.ch/. Acknowledging and supporting these policies is in direct opposition to the proposed exponential density increase. Anything higher than a three-story dwelling is simply unacceptable“.
